Innovation & Excellence Awards 2024 - Southeast Asia Pilot

Asia Ocean Expedition Guide of the Year.

Developed by Bill O’Leary, Grenville Fordham and the late Andy Dowden, Southeast Asia Pilot is the region’s most comprehensive cruising guide. Covering travel details of Southeast Asia’s major countries, island nations, and anchorages, the guide has been designed to inspire today’s most enthusiastic sea voyagers and adventurers. Southeast Asia Pilot’s 7th edition is its latest offering and celebrates the guide’s 20th anniversary in print – ensuring it’s bigger and better than ever. With more than 300 pages, authors Bill and Grenville cover much of the Southeast Asia region – from southern China and Hong Kong in the north to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and even northern Australia in the south, leaving no stone unturned as they transfer their own personal experiences to each page.

British-born Grenville now lives in Thailand after a career that’s included world travel, marketing, writing, and publishing, whilst his love of sailing was first developed in 1998. Southeast Asia Pilot’s co-author, Bill, was born in Australia and is an experienced professional mariner who first arrived on Thailand’s shores in 1987. Having founded Amancruises, the region’s first hotel-affiliated luxury yacht charter company, Bill has a breadth of experience in managing vessels and crew members in the waters that make up Southeast Asia.

The breadth of information delivered throughout Southeast Asia Pilot is presented in an easy-to-read style, without technical navigational language, to ensure the guide is highly accessible for anyone keen to explore this beautiful region and its waters. The book is available as a glossy printed version, with international delivery available, or as an interactive digital guide. The judging panel was impressed by the comprehensive level of detail offered in the guide, which is consistently updated with each edition. With a new guide developed every three years, Southeast Asia Pilot has captured the evolution of Southeast Asia over the last two decades and its transformation into one of the world’s most popular destinations for marine travellers. Southeast Asia Pilot outlines with clear and detailed charts the layout and facilities offered in more than 600 of the region’s most prominent anchorages and marinas, including the latest facilities and details regarding new resorts that have been developed here.
